When people ask what it’s like leading a growing healthcare organization, they often assume the biggest lessons come from strategy meetings, financial reports, or boardroom discussions. Those moments certainly matter. But some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned haven’t come from a boardroom—they’ve come from the people I have the privilege of working alongside every day across the Rx Medical family of healthcare businesses.
As our organization has grown, one thing has become increasingly clear: great companies aren’t built solely by strong leadership. They’re built by people who consistently show up, support one another, solve problems, and take pride in doing the right thing—even when no one is watching. The longer I lead, the more I realize that the best leadership lessons rarely come from presentations, planning sessions, or boardroom discussions. They come from everyday moments—working alongside talented people who challenge, inspire, and remind me what great leadership really looks like. Here are five leadership lessons that continue to shape the way I lead.
5 Leadership Lessons Worth Sharing
- People need purpose: Every role contributes to something bigger than itself. Whether someone is supporting a surgeon in the OR, managing inventory, coordinating logistics, or working behind the scenes, people are motivated when they understand how their work impacts others.
- Recognition is an investment: Titles and compensation matter, but so does taking the time to acknowledge effort, commitment, and a job well done. People remember when they’re appreciated.
- Culture is created by everyday actions: It’s built in conversations, decisions, accountability, and how we treat one another during both successes and challenges. Culture isn’t what we write on a wall—it’s what people experience every day.
- The best ideas don’t always come from the corner office: Some of the smartest improvements we’ve implemented began with employees closest to the work. Great leaders create opportunities to listen.
- Trust takes time—and consistency: Whether with employees, customers, surgeons or healthcare partners, trust isn’t built through one conversation. It’s earned over hundreds of interactions where people do what they say they’re going to do.
Leading a growing healthcare organization offers my team and I countless opportunities to learn, but the most meaningful leadership lessons haven’t come from the boardroom. They’ve come from the people I have the privilege of leading and learning from every day.
Because at the end of the day, companies may grow through strategy…but they thrive because of people.
📌LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Think about the last decision you made as a leader. Was it influenced solely by data, or did you also consider the people who would be affected by it? Great leadership requires both.
